Q: What is the format of the program?
A: When students register for Expanding Your Horizons, they choose the career track that interests them. On the day of the event, they attend four workshops that fall into the track category.
Q: What career tracks are available?
A: Tracks are available in medicine, technology, engineering and earth science, as well as a general career sampler track. Read more about the tracks on the homepage (www.eyhaustin.org).
Q: What is a presenter?
A: Presenters should be prepared to talk about their day-to-day work routine, their education, the things they like most/least about their career, and answer questions from students. Presenters will also facilitate a hands-on activity that highlights one aspect of their career.
Q: How long is each workshop?
A: A workshop lasts 50 minutes. A presenter must lead at least two workshops or can lead up to four workshops throughout the day.
Q: What format is the workshop?
A: Each workshop should begin with an icebreaker or question/answer period (lasting no more than ten minutes) that gets students excited about the workshop topic. Then the presenter should spend the majority of the time (approximately 30 minutes) leading the girls in a hands-on activity. Finally, a quick wrap-up ensures students walk away with a lasting impression of the workshop topic.
Q: How many girls are in each workshop?
A: Approximately 15 girls will attend each workshop.
Q: Will Girlstart provide any materials for my workshop?
A: Each presenter is responsible for their own materials, including supplies for experiments and hand outs.
Q: Can someone help present with me?
A: Yes! If you have someone you'd like to present with you, we encourage you to include them. Volunteer assistants will also be available to help you in your workshop.
Q: What should I title my workshop?
A: Girlstart will help you choose a fun and exciting title for your workshop!
Q: Are computer labs available?
A: Computer labs for workshops are available, but advance notice is required to make arrangements. Please let Girlstart know that you need a computer lab when you apply.
Q: What coursework level should I present?
A: Girls attending the workshop will be in the 6th through 8th grades, so plan on a middle school coursework level.
Q: Where are the workshops held?
A: Workshops are held in the University Teaching Center (UTC) located on the University of Texas campus. Maps, directions and more information about parking will be sent to all presenters at least two weeks before the event.
Q: Will training be available?
A: Presenters are invited to attend the Presenter Training and Networking Reception in early March. Details will be sent to all EYH presenters.
Q: How do I sign up to be a presenter?
A: You can sign up online in December 2007, and once your workshop idea has been submitted, you will be contacted for more information. Be prepared to provide a general idea of what you have in mind for your icebreaker and your workshop activity when you register online.
Q: Who do I contact with further questions?
A: For additional information about being a presenter or general event volunteer, please contact Sarah Haegelin, Volunteer & Event Coordinator: sarah@girlstart.org.
